AT A GLANCE: RECENT COLLABORATIONS

1. ...(Iphigenia), (2021-22 tour; 2022, The Kennedy Center; ongoing performances)

Sharmay is proud to regularly perform the role she originated, Iphigenia the Elder, in esperanza spalding and Wayne Shorter's extraordinary new work. Joining the cast for the work's initial tour, she performed in collaboration with The Kennedy Center, CalPerformances, Mass MoCA, Arts Emerson, and The Broad Stage, and has since gone on to join the work's subsequent performances. Sharmay reflects: "esperanza spalding gave me a poem by the Joy Harjo, and Wayne Shorter gave me an amazing “devil’s waltz leitmotif.” That was all I had- and from there, I completely improvised my aria."

2. Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote (2025, 2026, ongoing)

A new children’s chamber opera by Anthony Davis based off the children’s book Pancho Rabbit. Sharmay notes: "Maestro created the orange snapping turtle for me. I built a wall at the border... and unfortunately we know the rest. But, there’s hope at the end! It was especially powerful when we performed in Mexico."

3. Ruinous Gods (2024, The Spoleto Festival, USA)

Commissioned by The Spoleto Festival, USA, for their 2024, season, this piece was created by Layale Chaker and Lisa Schlesinger. Reliving this experience, Sharmay reflects: "This show was based off the true story (!) of refugee children who were fleeing war torn countries and once they reached safety, put themselves in a self-induced coma. This became known as resignation syndrome. I developed the role of Swift (a non-binary teen, who was able to save many children). This will always stay with me."

4. Il Tabarro (2023, OnSite Opera)

Sharmay's repertoire spans both new works and classic operas, though often with a twist. Singing La Frugola, Sharmay recalls that "this was such a special production where we performed outside- it was a full, site-specific production on The LightShip Ambrose."
